Three players share the lead after the first round of the Golf Saudi-backed 2026 Aramco China Championship played on the World Cup Course at Mission Hills China in Shenzhen. English duo Annabell Fuller and Charlotte Heath were joined at the top of the leaderboard by China’s Liqi Zeng after they all fired rounds of 65 (-8). Co-sanctioned by the Ladies European Tour (LET) and the China LPGA Tour (CLPGA), the four-day, 72-hole individual stroke play tournament saw low-scoring conditions reward aggressive play, with Chinese amateur sensation Yujie Liu applying immediate pressure just one stroke back in solo fourth at seven-under as an elite international field battles for the US$2 million purse and critical Rolex Women's World Golf Rankings points.
“Everything is good. My putter is [doing] very well. I made a 10-yard birdie, so it was a nice day. This course is good for me. I like the second shots; they’re easy for me, and my putter is good too,” said Zeng.
“My front nine was on fire. Every approach shot and every single shot was perfect. I had an incredible round, and I loved the other players in my group. Cass [Alexander] is a wonderful player, and I’m super honoured to get the opportunity to play with her today. Overall, it was super fun,” said Liu.
Beyond the action on the fairways, the marquee week serves as a premier meeting ground for international sports executives and cross-border commercial partners, uniting stakeholders from across Asia and the Middle East to advance the commercialization, visibility, and global reach of women's golf.
Alongside the opening-round action, tournament week hosted the Elevated Green Sports Infrastructure & Capital Forum powered by FII Institute at the Winners Circle, exploring strategic investment across growth markets and live sporting assets.
Speaking during "The Strategic Investor’s New Arena," Tenniel Chu, Vice Chairman of Mission Hills Group, emphasized the enduring commercial power of world-class live events and tier-one strategic alignments, noting that "what we are really, truly investing in right now is an experience money cannot buy. Like what we're doing this week with Aramco, with PIF... bringing this world-stage event, bringing together players from 32 different countries, broadcasting to over 100 countries to showcase how sports can connect with the world." Chu pointed to the leaderboard presence of China's own amateur talent as proof of this global platform's impact, stressing that elite partnerships drive scalable value: "With every major tournament we host, it's not only about having the right content, but also the right players... It's about finding the right partner. Because I always believe that one plus one does not necessarily equal two; it can equal 1.4 billion."
Turning to future capital allocation in the session "Where Will the Next Dollar of Sports Investment Go," panelists highlighted that the next major frontier lies in specialized infrastructure, youth pathways, and women's sports assets. Highlighting the commercial shift, Leo Chu, CMO of Sports Illustrated China, stated that "there's a huge amount of attention behind women's sports, but I think it's really the investment potential that lies in the infrastructure for it... You need to put on a new lens. You can't apply that traditional sports lens to it." This call for scalable, long-term foundation-building directly reflects Golf Saudi’s overarching mission, expanding the PIF Global Series to deliver premier commercial stages globally while cultivating grassroots ecosystems, elite talent development, and high-impact sporting infrastructure at home in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and across international growth corridors.
At the Forum, FII Institute also launched The New Geography of Sports Capital, produced in partnership with Silverbacks Holdings, which examines how sovereign capital, mobile-first fan ecosystems, and the institutionalization of domestic leagues are creating durable, investable sports assets across Growth Markets.
Heading into Friday’s second round, all eyes turn to a marquee lineup as England’s co-leaders Heath and Fuller look to maintain their blistering scoring momentum against China’s surging contingent led by Zeng and prodigy Liu. The stage is set for a captivating cross-continental duel across the World Cup Course, with the British contingent and China’s finest CLPGA stars going head-to-head for control of the US$2 million season finale.
